At Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy (BHHC), we believe in the power of nature to connect, inspire, and endure. As stewards of the land, we understand that the most meaningful gifts are those that transcend time—gifts that protect the natural beauty and ecological health of our region for generations to come.

Whether you're considering the future of your property or seeking a meaningful way to honor a loved one, there are several avenues through which you can contribute to our shared mission of conservation.

🌱 Gift of Land

Donating land to BHHC is a profound way to ensure its preservation. This option allows you to transfer ownership of your property, safeguarding its ecological value and natural beauty forever. In return, you may receive tax benefits and the satisfaction of knowing your land will be cared for and protected. For more information, please contact our Executive Director, Jason Meekhof, at jason@blueheronheadwaters.org or 248-795-2808. Blue Heron

📜 Conservation Easement

A conservation easement is a voluntary, legally binding agreement that allows you to retain ownership of your land while restricting certain types of development. This ensures that the land's conservation values are protected in perpetuity. It's an excellent option for landowners who wish to continue living on or selling their property but want to ensure its preservation. BHHC works closely with landowners to tailor easements to individual needs. Blue Heron

🧾 Bequests & Legacy Giving

Including BHHC in your will is a meaningful way to leave a lasting impact. A simple sentence in your estate plan can designate a portion of your estate to support conservation efforts. This option provides flexibility and ensures that your commitment to preserving nature endures beyond your lifetime. For assistance, please contact Jason Meekhof at jason@blueheronheadwaters.org. 💵 Other Ways to Give

BHHC offers several other avenues for contributing:

  • Stocks & Securities: Donate appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds to support conservation efforts.

  • IRA Distributions & Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs): Make direct contributions from your IRA or through a DAF for potential tax advantages.

  • Recurring Gifts: Set up automatic monthly, quarterly, or yearly donations to provide ongoing support.

  • Honor/Memorial Gifts: Celebrate or remember a loved one by making a donation in their name.

  • Real Estate: Donating real estate—even a home, rental property, or small parcel not suited for preservation—can make a lasting impact. BHHC can accept these properties, sell them, and use the proceeds to protect and care for vital natural lands and waters.

  • Support a Project: Contribute to specific conservation campaigns and initiatives.

Each of these options offers unique benefits and ways to engage with our mission. For more details, visit our Ways to Give page.

🌍 Real Stories, Real Impact

The Falvay family's decision to place a conservation easement on their Groveland Township property along Duck Creek is a testament to the lasting impact of thoughtful conservation. Their 5-acre wetland and woodland parcel, now protected, contributes to the health of the Flint River watershed and provides habitat for native species. Their story exemplifies how individual actions can ripple out to benefit entire ecosystems and communities. Blue Heron
